Handcrafted medieval longbow, a powerful weapon that dominated European battlefields
A medieval longbow was a powerful weapon that dominated European battlefields from roughly the 12th to 16th centuries. Our bows range in length from about 180cm to 200cm these bows are carved from a single piece of elm, ash or maple with elegant wrap for a handle, carved and polished buffalo horn nocks and with a hand twist the string using 14 strands of string binding material, pre stretched to ensure use straight away.
The longbow's distinctive D-shaped cross-section when strung gave it exceptional power. The flat belly faced the target, while the rounded back faced the archer. This design allowed the bow to store and release tremendous energy - a typical war bow had a draw weight of 100-180 pounds, far exceeding modern hunting bows.
Our bows can be made to most weights any bow exceeding 50# in weight can be made but will cost more depending on the strength requested please contact us in relation to this, we are more than happy to discuss this option. On the other end of the scale we make SCA approved bows going down in poundage to 15 # at a draw of 28 inches with the same appearance as a bow that is 50# at 28 inches. The only difference between the two will be that the lighter bow is skinner.
